Grant that moth-eaten couch the leather repairs it requires

By Andrew W Glenroy

Are you in the same situation I was? Do you have that expensive and (at one time) nice looking leather or vinyl chair or sofa? Is it time to start thinking about what you are going to do with this worn, but well loved item? Keep it anyway? Do you want to try and fix it yourself or do you thing of getting it professionally fixed? These are the things I have been plagued with for a while now.

I have been thinking for a long time about what to do with this chair I absolutely love.

You see I inherited this wonderful leather chair, but its twenty years old, cracked in places, and yes? there is even a tear here and there. My husband keeps telling me to put it in one of my famous garage sales, or give it away, but every time I look at that old chair, I just can?t seem to do anything. I love it so much! It reminds me so much of my grandmother! This simple chair brings back so many 'story telling' memories.

So I decided to fix it. I had two options open to me. I could get a DIY kit, or get it repaired professionally. I decided to look into both options and this is what I found.

The DIY Option

There are do it yourself repair kits ? I went to look one of these up to see if I could do the leather or vinyl repair myself, and this is what I found. You can get them online and they come with instructions online, so you can read how difficult it is, before you actually start the project. The instructions read on as saying that the kits need to be used only if the tears are small and not very visible.

So, the first thing I did was look over at that old chair. Where those tears tiny and barely visible? Hmm maybe? if I had cataracts in both eyes and was nearly blind! I still want this to be the option for me, so I went on to read. The repair material may not bond well with the leather, especially if the leather is old. Was 20 years old? If I asked my 80 year old friend, I guess he would probably say that 20 years was just yesterday. But can I really say that? Hmm, What if it doesn't bond?

Further instructions go on to tell me that I need to use grain paper and sand the repaired portion to look like the old leather. Is this supposed to work all over the chair? I think it will surely look like a patchwork quilt! Kind of artsy but not really what I want!

The Professional Way! ? Nope! The do it yourself option is not for me, the only way for me to go is to get it professionally repaired. So I went ahead and called to find out how much it would cost, I was surprised at how low the cost was. It wasn't expensive at all. In fact, I would say I got a great price. This was it for me and it turned out beautiful.

So I suggest, if you have a vinyl or leather sofa and need to have it repaired, you should get it professionally repaired. don't just keep that old look, and don't decide that it now has an antique finish. That was my way out. In the end my chair ended up being professionally fixed and looks great. It is now ready for another 20 years! - 22375
