Why Should You Have A Plan Writing Essays?

By Nick Sanders

Before you start to actually write your essay you will need to think about what will go into it. You should, therefore, consider making a plan of what will be included so that you can make sure your essay content will be appropriate and will go in a logical order.

When you set out your essay plan it can be used for a traditional essay to be submitted or for you to plan your essay in an exam. And this will help you greatly in an exam as you will be able to plan your writing and know which direction you should go in.

Plans do not need to take up much time, as you can use keywords and phrases, make notes of important references and logically order it within 5 - 10 minutes. Planning also makes sure you have read the essay question carefully. Just rushing in can make you forget the question, or answer the wrong one. Planning gives you a minute or two to consider what you are being asked to do and make sure you fully understand.

An essay without a logical order, and a beginning, middle and end will automatically score lower. An essay argument is supposed to be coherent and easy to keep up with. If you run out of time, an examiner should be able to look at your plan and see clearly the approach you were taking, and the order that you were putting it in, as well as your key points and references.

If you are not in essay conditions, planning work allows you to find out which words you may need to define, and find out what you could research to make your argument stronger. Even a quick brainstorm can count as a plan if you link the points you want to use into an order. Make sure you eliminate anything that is irrelevant, and have gathered related ideas under one heading.

When you have a plan for your essay you will be able to identify the different stages of your work and thus the question that you are attempting to answer. You will also find it easier to understand the direction of your argument and the ability of your reader to understand opinions from the different theories you are presenting.

You should also think about sketching out the different parts of your essay, such as titles and headings of the different parts. This will help you make sure that you are including all of the relevant information for your reader and also mean that you can direct your writing towards the topic that you are covering. Thus making sure all relevant theories are covered.

Therefore, it will be important to plan the actual writing of your essay to be able to concentrate on the valuable parts and not be confused if you have included all of the relevant points. This plan may also help you clarify the question, what is contained, and what you will need to do to complete it. - 22375
